LEGISLATIVE UPDATES - JAN. 14, 2020
HB 1178: Strengthening Collective Bargaining
Strengthens opportunities for working people to form unions and stick together. Provides a streamlined election process to form a union. This bill also requires access for new employees to certified unions in order for them to explain the benefits of union membership. “Right to work” is a fallacy and a distraction meant to divide working people and pay them less. If left unchecked, these anti-worker efforts will weaken our middle class and likely increase inequality. Only through strength in numbers have working Pennsylvanians really ever found economic progress.
Requires employers to set clear workweek rules, so employees can know when and how much they will work. Additionally, the bill will guarantee “predictability pay,” which pays workers when their shift is canceled or drastically changed. This bill puts the wellbeing of Pennsylvania’s people above corporate profits by requiring schedule stability and clear workweek rules and pay standards for workers in the retail, fast food and hospitality industries.
